Four years ago around Christmas, Don Purdue and Patrick Spargur heard the story of 150 homeless students at Rancho High School who needed support over the Christmas break. Their project to help these 150 has grown into an organization that now helps more than 2,500 homeless high school students on 44 campuses throughout the Las Vegas area every month.
Working with the high schools, Project 150 provides food, school supplies, clothing and toiletry items to homeless high school students. In addition, the organization supplies caps and gowns, bus passes and weekend meal bags.
Project 150 maintains “resource rooms” in 13 of the schools in which it operates. Food, hygiene and school supplies for the students Project 150 aids are available in these resource rooms.
According to Project 150 Executive Director Meli Pulido, the number of homeless students in the area has grown from about 9,300 three years ago to more than 11,000 today.
In the beginning, Purdue and Spargur delivered supplies in the backs of their vehicles. Now Project 150 is housed in an 8,000-square foot facility at Rancho and Gowan.
This new facility, sponsored by the Engelstadt family, houses Project 150’s offices, warehouse, volunteer areas and Betty’s, a boutique-style shop where high school students can pick up free clothing. When Project 150 moved into their new building, Cooper Roofing & Solar repaired the roof to ensure the elements wouldn’t stand in the way of Project 150 carrying out its mission.
During the holidays, Project 150 provides 1,500 meal boxes (enough for a family of 4) each for Thanksgiving and Christmas – feeding a total of 12,000 people on those two days.
Each quarter of the year, Project 150 features a drive to focus on particular articles for homeless students. But Project 150 accepts donations of critical supplies, volunteer hours and funds all year round!
Project 150 is one of the outstanding organizations that Cooper Roofing & Solar is proud to support and is worthy of your support as well.
From now through the holiday season, we will be featuring worthy charitable organizations that we support and assist. We will be highlighting the work they do in the community and urge you to remember them with contributions of your time, talent and treasure. Previous post in this series here.
