A few months ago, the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) embarked on an expansion of its Drop-In Center. We jumped at the opportunity to lend a hand, working through HomeAid Southern Nevada, one of the charitable organizations we are proud to support.
The 2,600-square-foot space allows the nonprofit to help the growing number of homeless teens with more capacity and ways to meet their basic survival needs while fostering self-sufficiency. More than 9,000 homeless youths were enrolled in the Clark County School District during the 2013-14 school year, according to the nonprofit.
The expansion, which doubles the size of the Drop-In Center, includes a new kitchen designed to serve teens’ daily nutritional needs and accommodate group sessions on how to prepare and cook food.
The expansion also offers a new computer lab, staff office space, a basketball court, a gym, art and music rooms and additional private areas for client intake and tutoring.
A $350,000 grant from Nevada Women’s Philanthropy helped fund the expansion. In addition, HomeAid Southern Nevada provided an in-kind donation of $175,000 in construction work.
The Drop-In Center expansion has opened for business and NPHY is hosting a block party marking the occasion on January 31 from 11 am until 3 pm.
Cooper Roofing & Solar provided a new roof for the Drop-In Center, with concrete tile donated by Boral Roofing. In addition, we removed the existing solar system from the Drop-In Center’s building and will be installing a new solar system on the expanded building in the near future. These are all portions of HomeAid Southern Nevada’s donation of construction work to the NPHY expansion.
This project is part of HomeAid Southern Nevada’s commitment to building new lives for the homeless in Southern Nevada through housing and community outreach. Cooper Roofing & Solar president Scott Donnelly is a member of the Board of Directors of HomeAid Southern Nevada and we are honored to be part of the NPHY expansion and to work to promote the mission of HomeAid Southern Nevada.
Congratulations, NPHY, on the new expansion! We wish you good luck and success in pursuing your mission of aiding those who need a hand up.
